View Full Version : What size pipe Should I use?

I have DeLaval 73 vacuum pump for about 200 taps. I plan to set up the pump at my sugar house and have my releaser about 1000 feet away. Off of the releaser I have 2 3/4 inch main lines, one of them is about 1000 feet long and the other about 500. The outlet of the pump is 1 inch and the attachment on the releaser is 1 1/2 inches. Should I use 1 inch or 1 1/4 inch pipe from the vacuum pump to the releaser?

I ran 1000 feet of dry line to my releaser last year and used 1-1/2,2-500' rolls. I was able to get the same vac at the releaser that I could at the pump. I know the bigger the better but I do not believe that using a larger line that the smallest connection(1" on the pump) would be beneficial.

Thank you Sugarsmith. That is kind of the way I was thinking. I was thinking that with vacuum I would get down to the 19 or so inches faster with the smaller pipe.

Kevin, I haven't spent any money yet for the pipe to go from my pump to the releaser. I asked this question so that I could make my decision based on other producers thoughts on the subject. I was told by a former associate that I needed to use 1-1/4 pipe. Knowing that a smaller space will pull down into a vacuum quicker going larger didn't seem like the way to go. I took another look at my pump and it already has been reduced to 3/4 inch. 3/4 inch pipe is $60.00 cheaper than 1 inch pipe which is $190.00 cheaper than 1-1/4 pipe. It looks like 3/4 inch is the way to go.

Thank you for the PM I never look at that part of the web page for some reason and didn't realize I had a new message. While I was there I also found a message that was sent to me by another member in April. Sorry Marty, I love my Lapierre RO and you will love yours too.

Russ the only thing you may want to keep in mind is future expansion. If you only have 200 taps and no room to grow go with the smaller. But if you can and want to expand later on the I would consider putting the larger dry line in the first time and not have to worry about it. You only need 1 CFM per 100 taps.

How many CFM will the 3/4" pipe allow to flow to the releaser? I know that I only need 2 CFM at this time but the possibility is there to add more taps in the future. How many I don't know but I have some young trees that will be tapable in few years.

Kevin- All I have for up there is that old 74 and a single can releaser which is probably too small,,,,I would buy the sensor from you if you were into selling it,,or I bet we can work something out,,,still need to find a big tank in my price range,,,,,at the end of the day yesterday steve and I went for a ride on the wheeler looking for more maples on that lot,,,,,if I were smart I would move my evaporator up there,,,,lots of taps...

Kevin I'm glad to see that you are back in New Hampshire. What happened ? The sugarhut catch on fire in Ethiopia?

I decided to use the 3/4" pipe on my vacuum pump. It works great. It's pulling 18" with half of the adjustment left on the vacuum regulator. I found a 1-1/2" elbow to attach to my releaser that had threads on one end and a bushing to reduce it to 3/4". Made a real nice adapter to connect the 3/4" pipe to the releaser.
