I have the opportunity to purchase a 1988 Waterloo evaporator in good shape(no arch) for $1500. 3 1/2 foot by 12 foot stainless steel evaporator with complete set of pans, with floats, preheater, steam hood. Stored inside last 3 years.

What should I be looking for, and what do you think of the price.

How much do you think an arch would cost for this unit.

Feedback is appreciated

Sounds like a good deal. Do the pans leak- can you fill them and check? Arch's are easy to find. Or you could build one. Either way, the arch is the easy part. Finding a good set of pans that are inexpensive is the tough part.

I'm happy with my 1989 waterloo 3x10. I'd consider making a masonry arch for it.

Is it welded or soldered ?

That vintage could be soldered with leaded solder. You can boil with it and the syrup CAN be made safely but you need to use special proceedures to avoid the lead leaching into the syrup. There are members here that can help you with that.
