I purchased a new taylor candy thermometer recently. When I stuck it in hot water the mercury came up then an air space apeared and then more mercury.I shook it like crazy but the same thing happened again. I tested boiling water 2 times and the reading was the same.I was wondering if the thermometer will give false readings and is there a corrective measure that should be taken?-jeff

Sumner Dole of UNH sent me an e-mail today with the fix for a thermometer with a seperated column. And Here it is.Hold the bulb of the thermometer over a candle flame until the top portion of the mercury is forced into the cavity at the top of the stem.Continue until the air has been purged from the stem and let cool naturally(alwayse store column thermometers vertically)You learn something new every day ,worked like a charm-

This question has been up in the air for a wile now. Do I get a prize like a sap sterilizer, I'd take a 200 gal sap tank if you asked me nicely. Oh well I am not looking for anything for free. I am glad that I do not have to buy another Thermometer.-super sap

Can you please wrap the bit up in a Maple Pro 20 x 66 evaporator with a stainless arch and stack. Or tape it to the back of an origional grandma moses oil painting. I think there is 4 Sugaring theme paintings to choose from. Thanks -SS
