just bought my first hydrometer and was wondering if i had to actually buy the special cup or does anyone have any neat ideas

I went to walmart and bought a small stainless thermos for $7.

You can use anything that will hold liquid......BUT I like the tall slim cups because they hold only enough syrup to float the hydro. The bigger the container the more sap you use to sample. After I sample I dump into the drawoff bucket regardless of its density. It all works out. Plus they dont break when you drop them.YUP it will happen.

The cup needs to be about the same height as the hydrometer or it is difficult to remove the hydrometer when you test thin syrup and the hydrometer doesn't float.
