You guys are killing me! I'm north of WRJ, I've got ~100 on buckets and have pulled down a whopping 3 gal. Now the buckets are all on "woods trees" that are on a north facing slope but I've yet to see a good run this whole year.
Maybe Wed.

we allow upside down staters to move here:lol:
I will come close to breaking the 20 Gal mark tonight, and the sap in the pan is super clear. More than the first time I boiled unsure why it is. The only diff. is my AOF system and hotter temps.

Plenty more sap for tonight.

deff. made fancy, 1st time in many years i dont know why but not ging to dump it wll sell.
About 2 gal of Fancy.
why do people like fancy so much just doesn't have the flavor, don't get me wrong still love it but heavier the maple flavor the better.
I made some of the lightest syrup all year last night. And dumped it in the canner. Totally forgetting about 2 or 3 gallons of DA in there.

I've decided that my Light Amber (Fancy) will all be used for candy next year. Although I like it, my family prefers the Dark Amber. Only 4 of my taps are still running, but they are really running hard. I still get about 6 gallons of sap per day from those 4 taps.
So far this season, I made about 3 gallons on 8 taps, and I also sold about 40 gallons of sap. Will probably get another 1/2 gallon of syrup before the season ends. With the sap that I sold, I would have made a total of about 4 1/2 gallons of syrup on 8 taps. Pretty good year!

Think MI going to be clear cut like VT was back in the day.
Ok you experianced old timers I'm gonna throw some approx. numbers out correct me if I'm wrong.
3000 gal syrup, it takes approx. 1 cord of wood for every 15 to 20 gal syrup made. So on that 3000/20=150. Thats right on or could be 200 cord if at the 15 gal mark. I don't know what sugar content these numbers are based at.
I have to work on my other numbers:(

WOWSERS 150 cord.... holy broken back Batman. You need a bigger RO for sure. Done correctly you can make 1 gallon of syrup to 1/2 gallon oil. 1500 gallons of oil $6000. Labor bill alone for handling 150 cords would be about that.

318 gals so far 78 gals yesterday good day for me. Sap is coming now. 4590 through the RO yesterday. Bring it on im ready.
55 gals. so far. sap didn't run at all for 4 days last week due to hard freezes. 35 during the day wasn't enough to get the trees to recover from the 12 degree nights. the w.f. mason 2x8 seems to be working out great. The syrup grades are also lighter after the mid-season freeze up. All in all I can't complain. Having fun and learning as I go!

WOWSERS 1. Done correctly you can make 1 gallon of syrup to 1/2 gallon oil. .
Do you know how much oil it takes to make a gallon of syrup by straight evaporation in a regular 3x10 evaporator with just a preheater hood? (no stamaway or RO). A friend of mine just bought one and he's wondering.

04-01-2011, 03:55 PM
Usually between 4 and 5 gallons, some really efficient evaporators will be just under 4.
With a RO and high concentrate we are usually a 1/3rd a gallon to a gallon of syrup

I have heard that straight out pans with oil is about 3 gallons

04-01-2011, 04:34 PM
I must be doing something right, I am averaging 20gal. of syrup per chord. No RO 3x12 raised flue forced draft. I hope everyone is using a 4x4x8 chord, not a face chord.

I am using check valves and the new CDL "Y" spouts, about a 50/50 mix, I call them neck and neck at the moment. The check valves are all on new pipe and line, the "Y" spouts are on 2nd year line. I have had much fewer leaks on check valve lines than the "Y" taps.

My tree location is exactly why I am getting out of it. If I make my sugarhouse into a 1 brdroom cabin in the woods and rent it by the week I will make more than selling syrup and get a tax write off to boot. The funds from selling my equipment will be invested back into remoldeling.

115 gallons this year on 600 gravity taps. was hopeing for more but the weather didnt cooperate. either to cold then it would get warm and not freeze at night. But all in all a very good first year on a real evaporator.

Last boil was on Friday, April 15. Season total was 1,852.5 gallons of syrup on 2,707 taps for 0.68 gal syrup/tap (or 7.5 lbs per tap if you prefer it that way). Could have made plenty more...sap is still running...but it turned buddy in our biggest section of woods (about 30% red maple), so we shut off the pumps.
Research planning for next year begins now.

Is there anything on the market that would remove the buddy flavor of late season syrup? It kinda stinks to have to pull spouts when the sap is still running good. That's great making .68 per tap. If we could fix the buddy flavor issue you might get .80 I look forward to reading all your new studies. Your active participation on this site is a great asset for all sugarmakers.

All I can think is what if it had run here when everybody else was making syrup. 9 days in a row it never ran here, We were off 2 degrees almost every day. Oh well still a great year. A lot of missteps and a couple of thousand gallons of sap dumped here or there and after tonight I will be over 4600

Is there anything on the market that would remove the buddy flavor of late season syrup?
There was a lot of work done on this decades ago. Some progress made by diluting then fermenting with a certain type of yeast and reprocessing (boiling) to syrup. Another way was via ion exchange (illegal). Short answer is no...there isn't any quick and easy or legal way to fix the problem of buddy syrup. Making it into sugar will remove some of the flavor.
