Silver soldered take off question

I have soldered in a copper nipple to a stainless pan for a syrup take-off valve. The pipe runs through the fire box ( barrel setup with resteraunt pans). Will I be in danger of the solder melting and the fitting dropping out ? The pipe will have liquid in it while boiling.

About to fire up the rig so feedback appreciated !

The only problem you might have is if you actually try to take it close to syrup. It would work perfectly if it was a sap pan, just like a drop flue pan. The sap will keep the solder from melting.

But there is a reason that finish pans don't have flues. the syrup down in the pipe will likely not mix easily with the rest of the pan and will finish first. It may burn in the pipe and then the melt down happens.

I would be very concerned about that going through the fire box. Not just for the solder, but the liquid boiling off in there, scortching it.

I agree with Riley, probably want to avoid that set up unless you have a steady flow of liquid going through it.

Thanks for the feedback, I think I can modify the fire box a bit and install heat shielding on the side that the pipe goes out, maybe protect it with some fire brick ? I was also going to connect 3 pans together the same way, these connections would be moving some sap and they would go out the side and then back in so I think the outside sections would allow for some cooling as well.

All these guys would know more than me, but an idea I have 'IF' you get the idea that pipe is getting to be sugar first and ify on a burn, would be draw off in a pail to get sap in the pipe and just add what was in the pipe back to the pre heater or pan.

Of course any mods you do may cover that too.

Post back on this, as I am curious.

Not sure on the draw off !!! but between the pans , I seen a siphon set up that would be better than in the fire box ... do a search on here for, siphon pan to pan or copy -

Thanks again for all the feedback, boiled for the first time last weekend and I had added a heat shield for the draw off, all worked well and the draw was very nice to have when it came time to drain and take it inside to finish syrup. Did not get the pans connected, but I will look more into the siphon idea as suggested. :)

2 gallons syrup so far with plenty more to boil. Still getting used to having a sugar shack and being able to boil when it's crummy outside. :mrgreen:

I did that with a finisher/bottler with the pipe running thru the gas burner. Smoked a nice batch of syrup. It was trash or for glazing smoked ribbs:cry:
