What determines the sugar levels.......I'm new to this and I don't think we had sugar level into the 3's last year and the first run from last Friday was 2.1

The governor is probably laying off all of the teachers so the kids will have lots of time off to become small businessmen.

Bottom line, tree health and size of crown, i.e. number of sugar factories, err, leaves.

Sugar was pushing the 1.5 percent mark here last week. I stoped checking it because it was depressing.

Last year we tapped on March 4th and the first few days we had 5% sap.By the 14th it was 3.75%. This year we tapped on the 12th and it is at 3%.

My hydrometer needs to lose some weight. 1.5% average. Almost exclusively sugar maples. I would think that someone is pouring water in my bags but I think they would pour in more then a couple of pints at a time. Disgusting.

Wow, how much syrup have you made this year? Trees still going, or are they done by you?

I've been sugaring for over 40 years and I have never even seen a sap hydrometer. Never figured it was worth buying one. It's not like I'm going to throw sap away because it's too low!

Not to be a wet blanket, but those things usually have multiple scales on them, and the 5% reading seems like a % alcohol gradation.
This year mine said about 2.8, but lined up with the 5 on the other scale. Boy was I excited for a sec.
