Can someone advise me on my new pump. Just bought a new 1" mustang pump. I'ts not self priming I plan to use it to pump from 15 gal tote to collection tank. With this pump not being self priming will it still prime the 30 in or so of inlet hose on its own or will it have to be primed. Next question if it will lose prime between totes can I run a shutoff on the inlet and the outlet side and a by pass hose before each and let sap flow in a circle until I open the shutoffs again at new tote. Or will I burn the pump up. I don't care to have to prime each time if I don't have to. The pump was very cheap if anyone is interested it came from pumps direct .com $129.00 Shipping included came next day. It seems to be a nice little unit Of course has'nt been put into service yet we'll see. Thanks for any input.

you will need to prime it every time or it will burn your pump up

Get a couple of ball valves and put one on the inlet and one on the outlet. Just before the pump runs dry, throttle down to idle, shut off the outlet, then the inlet and keep the pump full ... then remember to drain it before freeze up at the end of the day ... or you'll be shopping for a new pump sooner than you planned. (maybe even a self priming one)

Thanks Brent I was hoping something like that would work. I should have said that daughter gave it to me for christmas I did'nt buy it. So I need to make it work at least until she goes back home from boiling one night. She saw me loading those totes by hand myself last year and felt sorry for me. And I have over 100. It did make for a long day. Thanks again thats what I"ll do
