So I was reading this article:

http://cooltoknow.net/Home_and_Garden/view_topic.php?id=149&topic=Tapping_your_Backyard_Trees%3A_Bigleaf_Maple %2C_Alder%2C_Birch

It says that you can tap Bigleaf maples (the kind that grow out in western Canada and NW states), as well as Alder and Birch (which I have also never heard of). It sounds cool, and I would like to try it. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Really ... tap 4" trees

And use a hammer to "drive" them home.

That's as far as I read.

I never knew they existed. I have heard of the canyon maple, but have never heard of the Douglas Maple. You learn something new every day.

We've been birch tapping for several years and have a Birch syrup production manual on the classified section on this site.
We are offing a birch syrup tapping workshop next weekend & will be sugaring off in April.
