I grabbed a 9/16" bit instead of 7/16 when I tapped teh frist 10 trees I put buckets in this year and they are pretty much just leaking and nothing is going into the bucket.

Is this repairable or do I need to plug these holes and retap? How woudl I go about either one of these tasks?

Thanks for the help.

I would think you need to wait for next year for those trees unless you tru to wrap the tap with teflon tape or something to make it snug . I dont think plugging them is an option.. ouch!!

Start wittling some spiles out of some bambo. Lets get back to basics. OK sorry go to HD and get some plastic barb fittings and hammer them in. The tree is stupid it wont know its the wrong size tap. Just dont do it again:rolleyes:

just wrap tape around the spout until it fits snuggly in the taphole.

Greg is right, Don't plug the holes!!! Try the Teflon or different spile I don't know what the bucket spiles use for a hole size. I drilled a hole today and hit a dead pocket 2/3 the way in and left it to heal. I'm new at tapping as well, but when it comes to making the tap hole, I'm very precise on where the hole will be, so I don't damage the tree, or mess it up for the next year. I can say that I'm still learning and will always learn, from experts to you and me who learn from our mistakes.

Beast of luck, Try anything to stop leaks (As long as it's foodgrade safe)

I tapped a few trees on the wrong side and had to pulg the holes and tap on the right side and the corks D&G sell worked perfect for that. My trees in the bush will only run on the south side it seems.

Tape idea sounds good.

I had a small amount of teflon tape and wrapped 3 of the spiles this afternoon. Will see where that gets us and go from there.

Its been a long time since I whittled a spile, but, I've done it before and its probably the right thing to do.

What is D&G?

The north side taps will run later in the season. The Proctor Maple Research center did a test and I believe they found that trees that were tapped on the north and south side give the same amount of sap, they just do it during different times in the season. We have tapped our trees in so many different places that we end up tapping them al the way around eventually.

From what I can tell the the teflon tape is helping out. I'll need to get some more and fix the others.
