Gee- I used plastic buckets for years & don't recall any busting. Maybe its the Manufacturer of the pail your using a lighter gauge of plastic/??

I cracked 2 lids so far, one that I was drilling out for 5/16 tubing, and the other when I slammed my hand down on it to "set" it in place. I'm not sure if it's just the lids, which I'm inclined to think, as I drilled the sides of the pails for the tubing, and they were as cold as the lids were (about 35 deg F), and were OK.

Didn't experience that so far, never had a bucket freeze solid, there is always some unfrozen sap in the middle. But when plastic gets old it gets brittle and breaks pretty easy.
