Hi, I have just read the book Backyard Surgarin' by Rink Mann.

He insulated his barrel stove with fiberglass batting. Looks like regular R-15. This is my first year and I moved from turkey fryers to butchering the barrel stove in the garage. Now I'm working on improving the setup. Tonight I plan to add some sand to the slope and install some more fire bricks.

I have called around locally looking for some of the ceramic blanket that I have read about here. No luck. So, the question is to fiberglass or not? I have some cement board that I could use to enclose the sides a bit. But Fiberglass a no no?

Call a heating and cooling company, specifically a boiler installer in your area. They should carry the blankets.

Put the sand and fire brick in this evening. There is not much bare steel above the brick and below the pan. Thinking that I will see how much this modification helps. I'm not to sure how much of a season is left here in central Indiana. Had a good run today. I will check on some boiler works.

Also call a pottery supply they use it for the homade kilns

Do a search for refractory supplies in your area - most will sell firebricks and ceramic blanket material. One in Michigan sent me their ceramic blanket leftovers from there large rolls (enough to line my arch 3 or 4 times) for $50.

You can use fiberglass as I used to use it many years ago on cinderblock arches and it worked good and was cheap and fire never seemed to affect it much.

Well the season is getting close to over for me here. I have the fiberglass, maybe I do nothing. I took the day off work to boil, looking forward to next year. I see a new set of stainless pans and 100 taps in my future.

Thanks for the info, next time I fire it up I'm going to add a bit of the fiberglass.

I need to work on the pre-heater. A pan across the main pan drips condensate back in to be reboiled. I want to add copper tubing and a 8 " jacket around the 6" flue. Some things to work on before next Friday night boil.
