I was able to get a used barrel that contained molasses from a local bakery. The smell is still strong and I only think they gave it a quick wash. What is the most effective way to clean it well enough to avoid tainting the sap I store in it?

Take it to a carwash first!!! Use hot water and pressure. Then rinse it with hot water when you get it home. Last thing to touch the drum should be the cleanest water.

Are you willing to ruin your Syrup with a cheap give away tank?

Is a little molasses smell really going to taint sap??? I doubt it, I would just fill it with hot water a few times and if it seems clean enough, start using it.

hot summer sun kills colors, and odors really well.

Maple sap and syrup pick up off flavors very very easily.

I wouldnt use it this year. clean it a few times, then leave it out on the hot sun all summer

Fill the thing with hot water and a few pounds of baking soda and drive around with it in your truck for a week. Dump and rinse. If you can still smell it use it for a rain collection barrel for your garden plants. The smell will transfer into your sap if it has an odor.
