Just curious on how deep to go with my spile. Starting from the end of the spile going into the tree.....to the raised lip (where the hook is) is 1-1/4". Should I still drill my hole 1-1/2" - 2"? Curious if the back of spile needs to seat at the deepest point of my drill hole.
Definately newbie questions...I know! We're going small this year and will add several more taps next year. Hopefully I add it to my little bio at the bottom of my threads. Also, you guys are giving me great ideas on small evaporater setups as I expand next year.....there's no shortage of ideas or pics! Thanks!

You want a gap at the back of the spile. For sap to build up and run into your spile. Depending on which one you have alot of them are only open at the ends. If they are pounded into a shallow hole they will bottom out and restrict flow.

If your spout is tapered do NOT drive it in to the shoulder, you may split the bark and the sap will run down the bark not into your bucket.
