Does anyone know if these tress are actually in production? Meaning can you buy these trees as saplings now?

I hope so. I bought some already.
The Cornell U. website is impenetrable. The site mentions the Cornell Sugar Maple Program, but the link is dead.

Contact Mike Farrell at Cornell. He was very helpful:

As I was reading some posts from the past about this topic (in 2008) people seemed to have a lot of negative things to say about these trees like not long lasting tress, syrup might be darker, they fall over easily, ect...... Can anyone attest to any or all of this? I am sure a lot of people have Silvers on their property but how many people are tapping sweet sap Silver Maples?

There are 2 different groups of "super sweet maples available. Those available through Mike Farrel are Sugar Maples that have been selected for high test and then cloned and the seeds from those clones used to start the trees. They are not rapid growth trees but they are working on getting some that are.
I think the ones from St Lawrence Nursery are from Silver Maple stock and are rapid growth trees.

how long before one of these trees would be ready to tap?

The sweet silver maples can be tapped in 8-10 years with a sugar content of 3-5 percent. Sounds a lot better than 30-40 years to grow for sugar maples big enough to tap. I wonder how long these trees live. Even if they only produced sap for ten years. You could have more planted ready to produce sap by then. I think I may plant a few, after a little more research. Many questions will have to be answered first.

Sorry to here that. When are you supposed to plant these trees, spring/fall ?

I planted 2 last spring along with 8 other trees and the only tree to die was one of the sweet sap maples, before it died all the leaves started to turn brown so I called the company I got it from and lets say I was less than satisfied with there response.

If I remember correctly there were a few thousand of the super sweet RPM trees given out by cornell or someone to plant and test by tree farms. I never saw a follow up article on those. that was just a few years ago so I assume they would need a few more year of collecting data and monitoring the sugar and growth rate as well as life expectancy.

So with the super sweet silvers, I wonder if they run good or do they need vacuum?

As far as I know and please correct me if I am wrong!! the super sweet and RPM trees have thinner type root system (not the heavy thick roots)to bring in nutrients out of the ground and into the tree faster, as well more storage for sugar.

I planted 25 Super Sweet Maples last September. I went to Dryden and picked them up. The deer hit them before I could prevent it so they had to recover from that this spring. In the past couple of weeks they have grown about a foot. Two of them died.

We have super sweets available for sale right here in central Wisconsin if anyone is interested. They were part of a tree improvement program back in 1982 and were planted in the middle of a hay field on the north side of our home. We let them go to seed 3 years ago and now we have about 500,000 8 - 12 inch high seedlings that we have been selling. We transplanted 1300 of these little seedlings this spring to a small open area in the hope of creating a good forest of these. If I had the land I would love to plant a 40 or 80 full of these things and let my children reap the benefits of the created bush.

We have been taping our 45 super sweets for 8 years now and they were planted in 1982 at 10 - 12 inches high. We were only tapped 10 of them back in 2007 which made them 25 years old but we started tapping all except 2 of them last year. They all look very healthy and produce sap very well. This spring was a very low sugar year with only 5 brix average out of those trees but in all the previous years we averaged between 6 - 8 brix right out of the tree. We don't use an RO. We have near 500,000 seedlings from 3 years ago growing around all the parent trees. We are willing to sell the bare root seedlings if anyone is interested. I wish I has some cleared land 40 or 80 acres to plant them on and leave my children with a super sweet sugar bush.

We have about 50 trees in what was once a hay field back in 1982 but is now our yard. These trees were part of a program to improve the maples in this state. The lowest sugar test we have from the combined trees sap is 5 brix from this year. In the previous 4 years we were testing anywhere from 6 to 8 brix right from the tree. We let these trees go to seed 3 years ago and we now have about 500,000 baby's available for sale if anyone is interested. We transplanted about 2500 of them this spring to a pasture north of our home with none succumbing to the stress. We may lose some to rabbits or mice this summer though. We will only supply them as bare root seedlings to those who want some. Please contact me privately if you are interested in any of them. Still not done transplanting.... the numbers may continue to go up.

Growing every year.

I got about 20 of the RPM Super Sweet Sugar Maples from Forrest Keeling Nursery in early 2016. About 15 of them I planted out on our hill and let nature take its course. The other 5 are closer to where I'd like to tap, and made sure the soil was right, mulched heavily and they are protected from the worst weather.

The 20 trees out on the hill are doing fine, up to maybe 5.5 feet now, the only problem being the strong winds damaging the leaves. However, the 5 trees nearer to the tap location did extremely well. One of them absolutely exploded - 2.5 feet when they came off the truck in 2016, about 8 feet at the end of summer 2017. Here is a picture of my daughter next to the tree: it was less than 3 feet when I got it off the truck, and a year later, was around 8 feet tall.

I am hoping there are others that can give us an update as well.

I got 5 sweet silver from St. Lawrence nurseries last year, planted in April. Mulched and watered, and they all took well. About 4 feet to start, each grew another 3 to 5 feet. They are supposed to actually be cuttings, or a clone, of a known sweet sap tree. Cost about $25 each. I assume I can make cuttings from early prunings to get another row as early as next year. I may experiment with one or two this year as I have not tried that before. I like the idea of vac-tapping saplings for my small yard.
