I hope everybody else had more sugar than we did. Just wondering if the low sugar is local or everywhere. Our sap tested1.1 brix.

1.8 or thereabouts here. And I thought that was a bit low! Guess I'm lucky.

My first run checked in at 1%. I had 325 gallons to start with and I think about 100 of those were water left in the lines from when I flushed them last spring. The next run will be all sap so I should get a better reading.

I tested ten trees with a new digital refractometer on Thursday. I broke off low-hanging terminal twigs and caught the drops. Don't know if this is a valid testing protocol. All the trees were open grown and had full crowns. One tree came in a 2.9. The rest were between 3 and 4 with a total average of 3.4. One was a Norway and the rest were Sugar Maples. Didn't test the Reds.

I noticed icicles on the cut Norway twigs today. Temps didn't get above 28 degrees today but we had full sun. Tasted very sweet. Brought one in to test on the refractometer. I let it drip on the lens and waited a minute to warm up. The sap measured at 8.7. I'm thinking the ice must have sublimated in the cold air and that is why I got the high reading.

I'm thinking if I gave the entire tree a haircut and collected icicles as they fell off in the morning, I'd have some great sap. LOL.

1.4% on high vac. Without vacuum it would have probably of been close to 2%.

We're getting 2.2-2.4, nothing crazy but we're still early. Looking forward to the higher content stuff for sure.

Had to recalibrate the hydro as tap water was testing .3;)

From our 2 day run last week (no sap since), 1% on day one and 2% on day two. Day one certainly included some water left in the lines from washing at the end of last season. My trees have always had low sugar (1.8-2 max), but I've added 100 very nice trees this year, so hoping this will help.
