View Full Version : Sap Freezing

To be on the safe side, I drained my pans because it is supposed to get down to the mid 20's tonight. I checked the sap in the flue pan and it was at 10.5 brix. Anyone have an idea how cold it would have to be to freeze that? On the inverse, what level brix would be safe to leave in the pan at 25 degrees. I realize that 25 overnight is different than extended below freezing but there has to be a point where you can let it sit. Thanks.

You could leave the pans for a month at 25 degrees at night and they would be fine.

There have been threads on this in the past. Only 25 degrees shouldn't be a big deal, but I used to be in the camp of leaving my sap in the pans for long periods until I had a TIG weld split last year.
I also gained some insight after doing my own tig welding this year. If you have light fusion/penetration the water can get behind the weld and slowly work it until it splits.

Thanks for the replies. I will check to see if there is any ice in the buckets in a little while. I don't want to deal with any split seams.
