I bought a used water jacket canner, and the water jacket was filled with automotive antifreeze coolant. Is this a normal procedure or should it only be filled with water?

It should not have coolant, especially automotive. Use water and drain it between uses.

Nick, not normal! Not a good idea to have something that toxic next to a food product. One slip up and someone you love could get very very sick!! Drain it, clean it, and just use water in it! Maple inspector may not like either.JimL.

I use water and the shack stays warm enough to keep it from freezing. But now you got me to thinking:o What about spiced brandy an apple cider. What ratio do you recommend. I would promise to drain it daily and only replace with new every day.

Thanks for the quick responses. I will drain it, clean it, and only use water.
