Has anyone ever used JB Welds waterweld product to repair a small leak on a pan? The product data says that it is approved by National Sanitation Foundation for use with potable water. It is good for up to 300 degrees. here is the product link, let me know what you think, should I use it or not?

yes worked great after many other products failed attempts i keep a tube in the sugar house now just in case of emergencies. I also know of someone even patching the fire side of the flue pan that worked.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. This is going to save me a lot of money :D. I am looking at adding partitions in my flat pan and draw-off valve to create a constant flow pan rather than doing it 1 batch at a time.

I would think over long areas the JB would seperate. I dont believe its ment for large area fixes. When a pan goes from cold to hot it does some funny things as far as streaching and warping.

thats true, do you think I might have any success if I just "stich weld" with it. maybe 1" every 4"?

thanks guys,
I gues my first idea won't work:cry:. I just made up a quick sketch of a 18"x36" three section pan to get priced at a local sheet metal shop. Any idea how much something like this would cost?

Are you in the witness protection program where are you. The best way to tell if your getting a good price on Benie Babies is look on Ebay and the best way to tell if your getting a good price in a SS pan is look on the trader and call the guys that are making them. then go to the local guy that doesnt make them as a buisness and get a quote and complain later that it was over priced and not up to standards:o ....................SORRY Its like asking how much my wife can eat Ill sent you a picture and you tell me.

Got my quote.
In Moncton, NB, Canada this guy wants $690.00 for a 3' x 2' pan with 2 dividers. A full 8' sheet of 22 guage is only $230.00 so it looks like I will be making my own pan.

sniperdodo,
If it were me (and it very well may be before the season is over), I would give the JB Weld you mentioned a try. Worst case, you try it and it doesn't work. Then you can go to plan b.
If you don't have sap where you are yet, doctor up your pan w/ the JB weld and boil water for a few hours. At least then you'll know if it works before you are into the season.
Note that I don't think it will hold up on the bottom of the pan though (if it's only rated to 300 deg).
Just a thought.

I have done quite a bit of searching and asking questions about brazing and soldering. I am now leaning towards mig welding. The wire is only $40 and the triple mix gas required is about $90. I am not a great welder but my plan now is to mig weld the seams/corners for structural support and maybe use the JB weld to help seal all the the pin holes that my welds will leave:emb:.
If its not too embaracing I will post some pics but I wont start this project until next weekend.

You are going to be challenged mig welding 22 ga stainless. I would either get a tig welder or solder it. For a one time deal, soldering is much easier.

Why doesn't anyone do gas welding, I saw a video that makes it look so easy with stainless steel?

Just for fun I dropped by the local community college and talked to the metal fab instructor. I showed him my sketch and he said bring the material in next week and he will have the 4th year apprenctices do it for free :D:D:D. Brand new pan for $140.
