cast iron grates

seems that someone told me old cast iron steam heat radiators would hold up well in the firebox as grates. Anyone have thoughts on that?

As heavy as they feel, many spots are quite thin. Cast your own using the plans in the AOF link.

I actually am making my own grates out of well casing. (courtesy of Valley View Sugarhouse, the banned one)

I have just about got them all cut in 1/3rds and my torch ran out of oxygen. Looks to be turning out very well. The dealers can keep their $400 grates.
