Is it normal that some of my tap holes from last year have not fully healed?

Yep Twitch -- it's like Brian says ---- I have some trees that I have tapped 15 years ago -- and even though they have healed can still make out the different old tap hole scars from year to year. On other trees - they vanish over the years. --- Mike

I don't think the bark grows back, it just gets larger with the tree and crowds over the hole. The inner wood grows in from all sides to close the hole. If the tree isn't growing very fast it can take a couple years to close up the inner wood. Some old trees aren't growing that much too and can take more time to heal.

I find the summers with high amounts of rainfall will make the sugars heal in that year like our past summer did.

The reds and silvers have no troubles healing in a year.

That makes a lot of sense. This summer was drier here in pa than any other summer i can remember. my tap holes are still completely open. the year before they healed half way through the summer.
