Jec,
You may be able to just start in the bottom and lay them up the sides? Several barrel evaporators on here. You might try using the search feature. I know someone has done it!

I started at the bottom and worked up the sides....a row on one side, then a row on the other. I went about 1/2 way up the barrel then let it dry for a day before putting the last row in then filling the space between the top edge and the last row of bricks with refractory cement.

When I bricked mine, on the curved sections I drilled a hole in the center of the brick and bolted it with 1/4" bolts. So far it has stood up for three years now.I cemented all the joints with boiler cement.
