I found this article on the Globe and Mail's website today. It was about the price of groceries but an interesting tidbit was that sugar prices are up realtive to last year. Will this mean good things for maple syrup prices?

I'm not surprised about the sugar, but I don't think it'll have a large impact on us, positive or negative.

A court ruling in December effectively ended the planting of GMO sugar beets. Since 95% of sugar beets are GMO, the ruling effectively killed this years' crop. And since that crop is the source of half the nation's sugar supply.... supply and demand and all, prices are gonna go up.

Our biggest artificial competitors derive their sugars from corn. No shortage of that. Yet.

genetically modified organism. In this case, the sugar beets were altered genetically to withstand spraying with glyphosate (Roundup).
