hello everyone, I am searching to put together a vacuum pump for 3000 taps. I am looking into the A20 model pedestal mount atlantic fluidics (kinney) pump and i'm not sure if it will be big enough. I'm going to set it up to be sealed with oil instead of water and it will be run from a gas engine. i'm just not really sure how many taps that size pump can actually handle and how much hp it will need.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

What is the HP and also the cfm?

the book shows a 3 hp electric motor and 30 cfm at 26"

100 taps for every CFM, so that puts you right there. Its good to go. But being right at the cut off line for taps you are going to want your tubing system tight, tight, Any leak will drop your inches of vacuum pretty good. I would recomend a dry line when you set that up.

I wouldn't run that pump with more than 2,000 taps. I have two of them and they are great, but for 3,000 I would go with the next size larger.

To be safe Bryan is right. I have an Atlantic Fluid water cooled which is a 7 1/2 horse on only 4500 taps give or take, so when i do have leaks the high cfm's make up the difference so i dont lose as many inches as if i would if i had a 5 or a 3 horse. But as long your system is tight you can get high vacuum with a 3 horse with 3000 taps. Or even more . It has been done but every thing has to be tight. That is the key.

Yes Randy is right, Tight is the key. Do you have the time to walk 3000 taps every day to ensure that everything is tight?

Probably not.

thanks for the input guys. guess i'll have to look into the A75 pump for more cfm. do you think there would be a difference in performance with oil as the seal over water? other than the freezing issue.

Hmaples- Other thing you want to keep in mind is if you let the coolant water, if you use water get hot the pump declines in cfms very rapidly. Youll only have half the pump then youll really struggle. Need to keep the water cool. I have an atlantic fluid pump and its a 130 10 horse for 4500 taps. Kind of overkill but it works good. I dont think you can really have too big of a pump. I still keep things as tight as I can too. Then your in really good shape. If the coolant gets hot though then you wont even be close to having the pump you think you have. Theron
