This book is somewhat dated. Practices have changed since then with the advent of new fittings and recommendations, e.g. we now use wet/dry vacuum systems, no more than 5 taps per lateral on average, multi-fittings (that only take one lateral as opposed to the old star fittings that take multiple laterals - go figure), less taps per tree, higher vacuum, etc. That said, there is probably some usefull info in the book, but I would filter through someone that is knowlegable about current practices.

Bascom carries and old small handbook, just a copied book in a clear protective folder if memory serves me correct. Cheap and it will help newbies get started right.

I just went to Bascoms today and saw they have a new book called Design, Intallation and maintenance of Plastic tubing systems. I took a quick look and it was really nice and up to date with all the new information.
