I wondering if you guys could help me out, im buying fire bricks this week to brick up the arch and wonder how many i will need? The fire box is 3x30in tallto the ramp. then im going back 14in to the ramp up to the flues. if i had to gess i would say its going to take like 60-70 bricks.

also is 1200 degree bricks going to be enough?

Im not sure haw many bricks you will need but bricks absorb heat you should put arch board under the brick.Last year i put the arch board behind the bricks in the flue area and i could toch the sheetmetal on the arch under the flue pan this year I am going to put arch board in the fire box and everything. The name of the game is to keep as much heat under the pans as posiible hope this helps a little.

A 1993 GH Grimm publication I have says 120 bricks for the 3x8. I don't know how they figured that, but it's what they published. Hope it helps.

Ok so i got my bricks today after i got done work. On my way home i was wondering how big of a mortar joint i should have and how fare back on the flue pan to start the ramp?

Sorry for all the question, thanks in advanced

Rookie, On my Grimm Lightning 4x12, the ramp begins at the back of the syrup pan and slopes up to a point about 1/3 of the way back the flue pan. I'd guess your dimensions would be proportional.
